Ovalized Laces - Benefits for Runners and Sneakers

For running shoes and sneakers, flat and ovalized polyester laces offer unique advantages from an orthopedic perspective.

While Kevlar and UHWMPE provide a reliable lace material for work boots and hiking boots which have lots of forefoot padding, polyester laces provide reasonable tensile strength with more stretch. This allows them to flex without breaking and adapt to the natural movement of the foot while moving.

A flat, or oval weave can help spread the lace tension over a greater surface area on the forefoot. This increased surface area prevents pressure points on the forefoot during movement.

Having a small degree of stretchiness and spreading the pressure over a greater surface area promotes a more comfortable and ergonomic fit.

Besides enhancing comfort, minimizing forefoot pressure in footwear offers several other benefits that contribute to foot health and overall well-being.

  • One significant advantage is the reduction of the risk of developing conditions like metatarsalgia, a condition characterized by pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot. By distributing pressure more evenly across the forefoot, there's a decreased likelihood of excessive stress on specific metatarsal bones, ligaments, and soft tissues.
  • Proper pressure distribution can help prevent the formation of calluses and corns, which often develop as a result of friction and pressure points in ill-fitting shoes. These skin issues can be painful and lead to more serious complications if left untreated.

Incorporating laces with natural stretch and an effective shape, such as flat and ovalized polyester laces promotes a more comfortable and reduced strain on various structures of the foot. An improvement that can help prevent long-term foot problems and improve overall foot health.
